I spent most of my life drawing with pastels (doing peoples pet portraits and their kids etc), and then got into photoshop in 2004. Have some friends who gave me some tips on it and didn't look back. I don't tend to use THAT many layers - and definitely no layers when I'm doing one of the master studies.
Wow that link is amazing!! I think (from what i found out on wiki just after you asked me about matte painting!), that they now use quite alot of photo manipulation in it as well. It is mind boggling what they can do.
